What Every Woman Should Know about OBs & Gynos
Women and men are different on many levels – that list could go on and on – but where they differ the most is health care, which is why it is important that women have a team of doctors who can address their unique needs.
Here, Dr. Carol Fujiyoshi, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist (OB-GYN) at Kauai Medical Clinic, discusses her field and provides guidance for when and why a woman should see an OB-GYN.
What is the difference between an obstetrician (OB) and a gynecologist?
Obstetricians take care of women throughout their entire pregnancy, delivery and postpartum time. A gynecologist typically will provide annual health checkups, including pelvic and breast exams. They also provide care for gynecologic issues such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, infertility, menopausal symptoms, pelvic organ prolapse, PMS, sexually transmitted infections, vaginal infections or heavy, painful and/or irregular periods.
When should a woman first see an OB-GYN?
Women can see an OB-GYN at any age for any gynecologic complaint. We recommend an initial health screening between 13-15 years of age as a general “meet and greet” session, unless there are specific issues.
Cervical cancer screening begins at age 21, unless you have a weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDs or are taking medication to suppress your immune system.
For pregnancy, you can call our office as soon as you think you are pregnant to establish prenatal care.
How often should a woman see her OB-GYN?
Every year for her annual checkup, but she can see us at any time for any specific issue.
