Haumea Friel Named Hawaii’s First Children’s Miracle Network National Champion
Haumea Friel has been named a 2022 National Champion by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals – a first for a child from Hawaii. The 7-year-old accepted the honor as part of Children’s Hospital Week celebrations in Orlando, Florida.
Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Group Welcomes Dr. Paula Lee to Gynecologic Oncology Team
Dr. Paula Lee recently joined the Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Group as its newest gynecologic oncologist. In addition to her appointment with HPH, Lee will serve as professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Kapiolani Patient Xander Cabales Named Hawaii’s 2022 Children’s Miracle Network Champion
Xander Cabales says his mission in life is to inspire others. The 15-year-old will do just that over the next year as he serves as the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Champion for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Xander accepted the prestigious role in front of Kapiolani staff members today at the medical center’s auditorium. Thousands of women will run, jog and walk around their neighborhoods for the 2022 Hawaii Pacific Health Virtual Women’s 10K & 5K Fun Run. This year, the 44th running of the state’s premier race for women will honor a woman who blazed a trail for a healthier Hawaii – Martha B. Smith.
Hawaii Pacific Health Honors More Than 1,500 Health Care Heroes on National Doctors’ Day
Hawaii Pacific Health and its four medical centers – Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center – recognized their physicians during Doctors’ Day events today. Each medical center honored its doctors with accolades from leadership and patients, lunch and a special gift for the more than 1,500 doctors who practice across the HPH system.
Moanalua Panda Express Ranks No. 1 in the Country in Raising Money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
Its official store number is 1282, but the Panda Express at Moanalua Shopping Center is No. 1 with Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The eatery raised $45,591 for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Hawai‘i’s only CMN hospital, in 2021, which is more than any other location in the U.S. In total, 32 Hawai‘i Panda restaurants raised $394,455 for Kapi‘olani last year.
Hawaii’s Walmart and Sam’s Club Stores Raise $383,060 for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children
Cow bells, a pie-throwing event and generous local donors all helped Hawaii Walmart and Sam’s Club stores raise more money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals than any other market in the country in 2021. Hawaii’s 13 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations raised $383,060.83 for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Hawaii’s only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

Hawaii Pacific Health is accepting applications for its 2022-2023 Medical Assistant Program, a unique opportunity that gives high school seniors a hands-on introduction to a career in the health care field. Held in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Education, Hawaii Pacific Health’s groundbreaking education and training program prepares high school students for a career as a medical assistant through a combination of in-classroom instruction and clinical experience.
Hawaii Pacific Health Partners with Honolulu Fire Department and Department of Health for Keiki Drive-Through COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics
Hawaii Pacific Health, the Hawaii Department of Health and the Honolulu Fire Department are teaming up to allow parents to get their kids vaccinated from the comfort of their vehicle with upcoming drive-through vaccine clinics for children ages 5-11 and their families on Oahu. The HPH Keiki Vax Squad Drive-Through clinics are scheduled on Nov. 13-14 at Aloha Stadium and Nov. 20-21 at Kapolei High School. The drive-through clinics will help make the vaccination process quick, convenient and kid-friendly.
Hawaii Pacific Health Employees Donate More Than $1 Million to Support Patient Care Through Annual Employee Giving Campaign
As part of the 2021 Hawaii Pacific Health Employee Giving Campaign, nearly 4,000 employees raised a total of $1,068,127 through generous donations of either gifts or pledges, which will go toward Hawaii Pacific Health medical programs and services that directly benefit the local community. This is the fifth straight year that employees have raised at least $1 million to support the organization’s mission to create a healthier Hawaii.
Hawaii Pacific Health Names David Underriner as Executive Vice President of Oahu Operations
David Underriner has been named executive vice president of Oahu operations for Hawaii Pacific Health, serving as chief executive officer of Hawaii Pacific Health’s three medical centers on Oahu – Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center and Straub Medical Center. Underriner has extensive experience in the health care industry, with more than 35 years serving in various administrative and executive leadership roles in Hawaii and Oregon.
