Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a person's blood glucose, or blood sugar, is too high. In Hawaii, diabetes affects 1 in 3 individuals, with nearly 600,000 people living with prediabetes or diabetes. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in Hawaii and nationwide.
Diabetes is complex. It requires the understanding of how food, activity, stress and medications affect the body’s blood sugar level.
Working together with health professionals such as registered nurses and registered dietitians who have special training in diabetes therapies and self-management skills, patients gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make decisions regarding diabetes control.
Hawaii Pacific Health offers a range of programs aimed at the prevention, treatment and control of diabetes. Our services can be found across all of our medical centers, both on Oahu and Kauai.
