Nutrition Counseling
Straub believes that sound nutrition education is a key component to a person’s health. A registered dietitian can help patients decrease their risk of disease, manage their weight, increase energy levels and achieve optimal performance in all they do.
A registered dietitian is uniquely qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy and promote optimal nutrition and wellness. Individual consultations with a registered dietitian are available at multiple Straub clinic locations on Oahu.

- Assessment of current dietary habits and health status.
- Body fat testing and anthropometrical measurements.
- Individualized nutrition planning and lifestyle coaching.
- Label reading and healthy shopping habits.
- Recipe alteration and healthy cooking guidelines.

Diabetes Self-Management Education
A certified diabetes educator or registered dietitian (some of whom are also certified diabetes educators) provides education on the fundamentals of diabetes and the skills necessary for the daily self-management of diabetes. Straub Medical Center’s program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
Classes offered include:
- Diabetes Overview and Goal Setting – What is diabetes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, types of diabetes, and goal-setting for success.
- Nutrition and Exercise – Meal planning options, how food affects your blood glucose, benefits of exercise, and getting started on an exercise program.
- Medications and Monitoring – Learn to use glucose meters, how your medication works and more.
- Complications of Diabetes and Understanding the Emotional Aspects of Diabetes – Understanding the complications of diabetes, treating low blood glucose, treating high blood glucose, proper foot care, and discussing emotions related to having diabetes.
- Fiber and Label Reading – Learn how to read the nutrition facts label, benefits and sources of fiber.
