Emergency Department Expansion Project Begins March 2025 at Straub Benioff Medical Center
Beginning Monday, March 3, construction crews will start work on a large-scale renovation of the Straub Benioff Medical Center Emergency Department (ED). This 14-month project will create a larger space to improve the patient experience and streamline care.
Following is important information to know about accessing Straub Benioff Medical Center and the ED during construction.
Medical Center Access
- The South Hotel Street entrance to Straub Benioff Medical Center near the ED will be closed starting Thursday, March 13.
- All patients and visitors not seeking emergency services must access the medical center exclusively through the main entrance on King Street or the Strode building on Ward Avenue. Access through the Strode building is available Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The Strode building entrance is not wheelchair accessible.
ED Access
- A temporary ED entrance will be available through the ambulance entry on South Hotel Street. Patient check-in and a waiting area will be inside to the immediate left.
- The parking stalls fronting the ED on South Hotel Street will be blocked off during construction. Two parking stalls will remain open for ambulances.
- A temporary ED patient drop-off and seating area will be located outside on the Ewa side of the ambulance parking on South Hotel Street.
- Staff will be available at the ED entrance to direct vehicles, patients and visitors who need additional assistance.
- All patient drop-offs and pickups are at the medical center main entrance on King Street.
- All transport companies are to drop off and pick up patients at the medical center main entrance on King Street.
See the map below for reference.
Renovation work will include demolition, electrical, plumbing, new roof and wall construction and more. There will be elevated noise, vibration and dust levels.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to make improvements to our facility to better serve our patients and community.
Non-ED Traffic
During construction, the ED entrance on South Hotel Street will only be accessible for intake of emergency patients.
All other patients, visitors, non-ED physicians, nurses and staff must access the medical center exclusively through the main entrance on King Street or the Strode building entrance on Ward Avenue.
Loading dock entry remains open for deliveries only from 4 to 10 a.m.
About the Project
The Straub Benioff ED expansion project is a 14-month project that will create a larger space to improve the patient experience and streamline care. When completed, the ED will have 27 care spaces with a modern and flexible design.
Additionally, the South Hotel Street parking and drop-off area will be enhanced for better, more-efficient access to the ED.
The biggest improvement this renovation will provide is more space. The new ED will be 10,600 square feet, compared to its current size of 6,800 square feet.
In addition to larger, more-efficient treatment rooms, other enhancements to the ED will include:
- A dedicated nurses’ station
- Six isolation rooms
- New exterior glass walls, roof and space with upgraded mechanical, electrical and plumbing work
