We Are Moving Forward Together
At Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, we greatly appreciate our nurses and their dedication to serve, alongside our entire team, the health care needs of our patients and community.
Through more than a year of negotiations, our goal has always been to reach an agreement on a contract that respects and rewards our nurses for their professionalism and the care they provide for our patients.
Kapiolani Nurses Agree to New Contract
We are pleased that the Hawaii Nurses’ Association (HNA) and its members have accepted and ratified our offer, which includes:
An Innovative, Collaborative and Flexible Staffing Model
- Kapiolani and HNA agreed to staffing levels that allow us to adjust based on the needs of our patients. These are not fixed ratios.
- Our staffing guidelines are evidence-based and aligned with national professional nursing organizations, including the:
- Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN)
- American Nurses Association (ANA)
- American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN)
- Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN)
- Our staffing model will be monitored and adjusted by a Staffing Council made up of Kapiolani nurses and nurse leaders who will meet monthly to work together on staffing issues and review staffing levels annually. This council will also work collaboratively on staffing goals and initiatives.
- A staffing and acuity tool will be implemented to help determine the schedule needs for each unit based on the ever-changing health care needs of our patients.
- We will continue our commitment to ongoing recruitment and retention programs aimed at bringing in new nurses and providing support for current nurses.
Highly Competitive Wages
- Across-the-board raises that average out to 3.5% annually over nearly four years.
- Longevity pay increases for nurses who have five, 10 and 15 years of experience at Kapiolani.
We value our nurses and are excited to move forward together to continue our mission of creating a healthier Hawaii.
