Allergies result from how the body’s immune system reacts to a food, medication, or something in the environment such as pollen or an insect sting. Allergic reactions can range from itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing, to skin conditions like hives and eczema, to a life-threatening reaction called “anaphylaxis.” Allergies are sometimes associated with asthma.
Different tests can be used to diagnose allergies, and there are a variety of treatments depending on the type of allergy, its cause and how severe it is.
Diagnosing allergies and finding the right treatments for each person is our specialty.
Allergy at Kapiolani
Allergies can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Generally, allergies are more common in children. However, a first-time occurrence can happen at any age, or recur after many years of remission.
Kapiolani has specialists who can help diagnose and treat allergies. We work with children and their families to develop a course of treatment tailored to their specific needs.
Services include complete histories and physicals, evaluation of patients with eczema, asthma, headaches, and patients who have been treated with medications without improvement.
