Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a simple surgery to remove extra tissue of the labia minora (vaginal lips), labia majora (outer lips) or around the clitoris (clitoral hood reduction).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the labiaplasty performed?
The most common type of labiaplasty is the trim procedure, in which the extra tissue is removed and sewn up directly. The next most common procedure is the wedge procedure, in which a pie-shaped piece of tissue is removed and a natural border is maintained. Extra folds of the clitoral hood also can be reduced at the same time. Closure is usually done with absorbable sutures.

Will the labiaplasty result in permanent scarring?
Labiaplasty results in minimum to no scarring, thanks to the forgiving quality of labia tissue known as “mucosa.” Surgery does not have to be redone with age, vaginal or C-section deliveries or menopause, and will not change a woman’s ability to become sexually aroused or achieve orgasm.

How long does the labiaplasty procedure take?
Labiaplasty usually takes about 45 minutes and may be performed under local or general anesthesia. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for two weeks, then two months after the surgery.

How long is the recovery time for labiaplasty?
Most patients take a week off from work, during which they can reduce swelling and pain by icing with a cold pack sandwiched between their underpants and an elastic garment, like Spanx. This can be done "20 minutes on, 20 minutes off." The patient can also lie with her bottom elevated to reduce swelling.

Patients can resume wearing tampons or having intercourse after four to six weeks. Trim labiaplasty generally allows for a quicker recovery.

While the most distorting swelling is gone by the six-week mark, residual swelling may take six months to disappear.

Will I need anesthesia for labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty usually takes about 45 minutes and may be performed under local or general anesthesia. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for two weeks, then two months after the surgery.

Am I a good candidate for labiaplasty?
Women who opt for this procedure are not looking for a “perfect vagina;” patients opt for surgery to address a variety of reasons, including pain from twisting and tugging of the labia during sports, discomfort during intercourse, or from itching, irritation and self-consciousness.

After Your Procedure

Although this part of the female body is indeed sensitive and delicate, labiaplasty recovery is fairly straightforward. Pain medication is usually required for a few days. A week off work is recommended to allow for quiet healing at home. Loose, comfortable pants are suggested, and an absorbent mini-pad can be worn to absorb minor spotting for a few days. Sanitary napkins/mini-pads are recommended instead of tampons for the first menstrual cycle after surgery. Bruising and swelling will resolve over the course of a few days to weeks, and a return to most physical activities can occur before within a month after surgery.
